Make an activity from words your learners know

Start with a short list linked to a lesson, book, or topic. This maker offers two different activities: finding complete words in a grid, or practicing a word and recalling it without looking. Both use your own vocabulary rather than a fixed set of downloadable pages.

Word search: recognition and careful scanning

Choose a grid size that fits your longest word. A 12 × 12 grid cannot contain a 13-letter word. Turning off diagonal words leaves horizontal left-to-right and vertical top-to-bottom placements. With diagonals enabled, words may also run up-right or down-right; words are never placed backward.

The answer key marks the generated placements and lists each word's start and end coordinates. Coordinates begin at row 1, column 1 in the top-left corner. Random filler letters can accidentally create an additional copy of a word or an unintended word. Review the finished grid before giving it to learners. Regenerate if necessary.

Spelling practice: look, copy, then recall

Each row contains the model word, a space to copy it, and a space for recall. Ask learners to read and copy a word, cover the model and copy, then write it again from memory. Uncover and compare with the answer key. The activity is practice, not an automatic assessment of learning.

A useful first worksheet

For eight everyday words such as GARDEN, WINDOW, and PENCIL, start with a 12 × 12 grid and no diagonals. For a more demanding version, keep the vocabulary and enable diagonals or choose a larger grid. This changes the search task without introducing unfamiliar spelling.

Printing and editing

Change the title, list, or settings and generate again to refresh the preview. The printable output contains the activity and, if selected, a separate answer key. Use A4 or Letter paper in portrait orientation. Browser margins and scaling can change pagination; check print preview before saving or printing.

Need to remove duplicate entries first? Use text tools. Need a smaller illustration for another worksheet or document? Use image tools. This version creates text worksheets and does not embed uploaded illustrations.

English letters A–Z are supported. Hyphens, accented letters, spaces within words, and non-Latin scripts are rejected rather than silently changed. Worksheet inputs are not saved or sent to a calculation server.
