How to Calculate an Overnight Shift
A shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM lasts 8 hours by the clock. Because the end is on the next day, subtracting 22:00 from 06:00 without an adjustment gives the wrong result. Split the shift at midnight or add 24 hours to the end reading.
Method 1: Split at midnight
From 22:00 to midnight is 2 hours. From midnight to 06:00 is another 6 hours. Add them for an 8-hour span. With a 30-minute excluded break, net time is 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.5 decimal hours.
Method 2: Work in minutes
22:00 is 1,320 minutes after midnight. 06:00 is 360 minutes. Add the next day's 1,440 minutes to the end, then subtract the start: 360 + 1,440 − 1,320 = 480 minutes. Subtract the 30-minute break to get 450 minutes.
Net minutes = end minutes + 1,440 − start minutes − break minutes
A shift with uneven times
For 22:15–06:45, there are 1 hour 45 minutes before midnight and 6 hours 45 minutes afterward. Together that is 8 hours 30 minutes. Deduct a 45-minute break to get 7 hours 45 minutes, or 7.75 decimal hours.
When start and finish match
09:00–09:00 is ambiguous without a day indicator: it may mean no elapsed time or a full 24 hours. DailyCalcLab uses zero by default. Select “Ends next day” in the time card, or “End time is on the next day” in the hours calculator, to count a full day.
For 09:00 today to 10:00 tomorrow, the end clock reading is later, but the shift still lasts 25 hours. The next-day checkbox makes that intention explicit. An earlier end such as 22:00–06:00 is automatically treated as tomorrow. Check your entries because a reversed time may otherwise look like a valid overnight shift.
Sunday shifts and weekly totals
The weekly time card calculator assigns a shift to the day it begins. Sunday 22:00–Monday 06:00 appears on Sunday's row. It does not split those hours at the boundary of a payroll week. If you need that split, calculate the two portions separately using the appropriate rules.
Daylight saving is a separate issue
These tools compare clock readings without a date or time zone. When a clock moves forward or backward during a shift, actual elapsed time can differ from the displayed clock-time duration. For that case, use dated timestamps and a time-zone-aware system.
Try the hours calculator for one overnight shift. See how to deduct lunch breaks and how decimal hours work for the next steps.
