Decimal Hours vs Hours and Minutes
7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.5 decimal hours. Clock-style time uses 60 minutes per hour. Decimal hours express the fractional hour in base ten. Confusing the formats can change a timesheet total even when the digits look similar.
Convert hours and minutes to decimal hours
Keep the whole hours, divide the minutes by 60, then add them together. For 7 hours 45 minutes, calculate 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. For 7 hours 20 minutes, the result is 7.3333… hours, commonly displayed as 7.3333 or 7.33 depending on the required precision.

Convert decimal hours back
Take the whole-number part as hours. Multiply the fractional part by 60 to get minutes. For 8.25 hours, the fraction is 0.25; 0.25 × 60 = 15. The answer is 8 hours 15 minutes.
7.30 decimal hours means 7 + 0.30 × 60 minutes: 7 hours 18 minutes. By contrast, a field explicitly labelled hours:minutes may use 7:30 to mean seven hours and thirty minutes. Check the field label instead of assuming a dot or colon means the same thing.
Why rounding can change a total
Three sessions of 20 minutes make exactly 60 minutes, or one hour. If each session is first rounded to 0.33 decimal hours, adding the displays produces 0.99 hours. This is why DailyCalcLab adds integer minutes and converts the final total afterward. Four decimal places are a display choice, not a payroll rounding rule.
Converting an already rounded decimal back to minutes may produce fractions of a minute. For example, 1.33 hours converts to 1 hour 19.8 minutes, not exactly 1 hour 20 minutes. Recover the original minutes if you need an exact value.
